Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
(John 15:13 ESV)
This principle is pretty much universally respected. This is what Jesus' love is like - he is going to lay down his life for his friends. Therefore, as in v12, this is what our love for each other should be like - laying down our lives - this does not (just) refer to a life or death situation but daily seemingly mundane decisions to put others needs before our own.
He is committed to the good of his friend because he loves them. How committed? How much does he love? "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends". Jesus laid down His life for you, He is committed to you, He loves you.
